Polymer-water interactions and damage detection in polymer matrix composites

چکیده
Polymer matrix composites have a tendency to absorb measurable moisture in nearly all operating environments. This absorbed either becomes bound the polymer network via secondary bonding interactions or exists as free water with negligible interactions. Damage creates new internal volume where molecules can exist latter state. study introduces novel basis for non-destructive examination which leverages locally-higher concentration of damaged areas. Experiments involved impact-induced sub-surface damage laminate prior exposure. Polymer-water interaction—determining state water—was characterized by near-infrared spectroscopy and microwave-range relative permittivity. Results show direct correlation between extent local higher levels at sites.

Self-healing of damage in fibre-reinforced polymer-matrix composites.
Self-healing resin systems have been discussed for over a decade and four different technologies had been proposed. However, little work on their application as composite matrices has been published although this was one of the stated aims of the earliest work in the field. This paper reports on the optimization of a solid-state self-healing resin system and its subsequent use as a matrix for h...
متن کاملSimulation of the microlevel damage evolution in polymer matrix composites
A 3D Isogeometric Interface-Enriched Generalized Finite Element Method (IIGFEM) is developed to analyze problems with complex, discontinuous gradient fi elds commonly observed in the structural analysis of heterogeneous materials including polymer matrix composites [1]. In the proposed approach, the mesh generation process is signifi cantly simplifi ed by utilizing simple structured meshes that...
متن کاملA micromechanics approach for damage modeling of polymer matrix composites
A new model for damage evolution in polymer matrix composites is presented. The model is based on a combination of two constituent-level models an9 an interphase model. This approach reduces the number of empirical parameters ·since the two constituent level models are formulated for isotropic materials, namely fiber and matrix. Decomposition of the state variables down to the micro-scale is ac...
متن کاملModeling of progressive damage in aligned and randomly oriented discontinuous fiber polymer matrix composites
Damage constitutive models based on micromechanical formulation and a combination of micromechanical and macromechanical damage criterions are presented to predict progressive damage in aligned and random fiber-reinforced composites. Progressive interfacial fiber debonding models are considered in accordance with a statistical function to describe the varying probability of fiber debonding. Bas...
